EXPERIENCE
Open timber framing will allow for a fully immersive and magical woodlands experience while protecting patrons from weather and sun. Sounds from the forest will filter in and become the setting for Shakespeare’s storms and wooings. Patrons will experience the intimacy that Elizabethan audiences enjoyed, without layers of technology between audience and performer, surrounded by materials that pay homage to our natural mountain environment.
Sustainability
Timber construction is the only truly carbon-negative building method, making it an ideal choice for sustainable development. All lighting will comply with the City of Flagstaff’s dark sky regulations, and the facility is expected to be powered by solar energy. Water conservation will incorporate rainwater harvesting features to maximize efficiency and sustainability.
Firewise Principles
Development of the Mountain Rose and surrounding landscape will follow Firewise Principles in accordance with the U.S. Forest Service’s guidelines. This includes, but is not limited to:
Defensible Space Landscaping and Maintenance
Use of Non-Combustible Materials and Fire-Resistant Coatings Where Applicable
Use of Dry Fire Suppression Systems
Support of Forest Restoration and Fuels Reduction Treatments
design
The theatre will be a state-of-the-art timber frame structure, serving as a showcase for high-quality wood architecture. The Mountain Rose will be primarily built from locally sourced timber and reclaimed timber. The theatre will seat up to 400 audience members, and like original Elizabethan theaters, have a standing pit, which could accommodate up to an additional 100 audience members.
